When ultrasound waves pass from one medium to another, some of the waves are reflected by the boundary and some are transmitted, even refracted
Because reflected waves have to travel further, there is a delay between the original sound wave and the reflected sound wave
You can explore structures with waves by looking at what happens to the wave when it passes through the object
Ultrasound is used to 'see' inside the body, this allows doctors to diagnose medical conditions without having to open up the body
Sonar sounding is used by ships and submarines to locate objects in the water. A sound wave is emitted by the vessel and is timed. The distance is then worked out

These vibrations are passes on to the tiny bones in your ear called the ossicles, through the semicircular canals and to the cochlea. The cochlea then turns the vibrations into electrical signals which are sent to the brain

The limits are caused by the size and shape of our ear drum as well as the structure of all the parts of our ear
