Attachment 2
Types of attachment
Ainsworth indentified three attachment types:
- A- Insecure avoidant- strong willingness to explore, no separation anxiety, no stranger anxiety, ignored caregiver on reunion
- B- Securely attached- strong willingness to explore, slight separation anxiety, high stranger anxiety, enthusiastic upon reunion
- C- Insecure resistant - weak willingness to explore, high separation anxiety, high stranger anxiety, conflicting behaviours upon reunion (seek but also reject caregiver)
-
Findings:
- Insecure avoidant-15% of babies
- Securly attached-70% of babies
- Insecure resistant-15% of babies
Ainsworth concluded that mothers with good sensitive responsiveness can correctly interpret infants signals and respond correctly
Evaluation:
- Strength: Reliable-children tested multiple times have the same attachment type
Evaluation:
- Weakness:Lack ecological validity as it lacks mundane realism
- Weakness: It focuses too much on behaviours of infants and not on mothers behaviour-which could effect results
