Reflection of Difficult Workplace Communication
Introduction
Communication - 'Process of acting on information'
Main idea - Values and Beliefs being challenged in the workplace
Certain barriers and noise stopped me from standing my ground and getting my point across in initial interaction.
Noise - Literal and psychological interference of communication
Situation
Disagreement about a requested task involving a customer
At work in the restaurant
Between my manager and I
It happened in early March
Barriers
Initial barrier - physical
Her approach being 'egocentric'
my approach being other oriented
'Noise' mostly pyschological and power dynamic
Thoughts of offending customer
anxiety towards not following manager's request
Noise hindering my response and assertiveness
Her- avoiding responsibility
Beliefs/Values
Business minded rather than other oriented
Both- making assumptions that the other is ok with the request
Her- putting money and materials above the welfare if her staff and customer
Very self oriented perceptions on both sides
My beliefs of respecting the feelings of others
Speaking up, even to authority when the request is offensive
Impacts
Emotions
Me: Shock, anxiety and then anger.
Her: Concern then satisfaction followed by confusion and irritation
She spoke softly (verbal)
My reaction was delayed/Her's completed
Created conflict
Non verbal behaviour - Both walked away at points of our communication without finalising our intentions.
Future Strategies
I need to direct and confident
Maintain active listening
My values are strong but my assertiveness is not
