Life Science Skeletal System
Functions
Movement
Skeletal System provides points of attachment for muscles.
Support
The backbone is the main support center for the upper body. Holds your head and protects the spinal cord
Protection
The bones of your skull protect your brain. The bones of the rib cage protect the heart and lungs
Makes Blood
Red and white blood cells are formed by tissue called bone marrow, which is in the bone
Storage
Bones store minerals (Helps to avoid Osteoporosis)
Major Skeletal Parts
Axial Skeleton
Includes the skull, spine, ribs and sternum.
Appendicular Skeleton
The appendages of the body, including the shoulders, arms, hips and legs.
Clavicle (collar bone)
Holds the shoulder joint away from the rest of the upper body and is only as thick as your little finger
Scapula
The scapula is located on the back side of the ribcage and helps provide shoulder joint movement for the arms
Vertebral Column (Spinal Cord)
The cervical region (neck bones)
The thorasic region (what the ribs are attached to)
The lumbar region ( the lower part of the back)
Tail bone
Vestigal Organ
A.K.A coccyx
Main group bones
This is the upper arm bones
Rib cage
Sternum (Breastbone)
Pelvis (Dancing Bone)
Femur (Largest bone in the body)
This is a tibia and fibula
Joints of the body
Ball and socket joint
Round end of bone fits in with another bone
Hinge Joint
Movement in one direction
Pivot Joint
A bone that is atop another and allows free movement (neck, wrist)
Immovable
Cannot move
Gliding Joint
Bones that can move across bones freely
Connectors of the body
Ligaments
Connect bone to bone
Tendon
Attaches muscle to bone
Cartilage
Acts as a cushion between bones at a joint and protects the bone
Problems of the skeletal System
Fracture
Dislocation
Sprain
Arthritis
Stiffening of the joints
Scoliosis
Curvature of the spine
Osteoporosis
Brittle Bones
