Gullet
Muscles of the gullet contracts and relaxes to push the food down into the stomach

Tongue rolls food into a ball and pushes it into the gullet

Salivary enzyme, amylase breaks down starch into simpler form
Stomach
Mashing food into a liquid mixture
Produces enzyme to digest protein
Acid to kill bacteria in food
Small intestine
Digestion of all food completed here
Different enzymes help to speed up the digestion of carbohydrates, proteins and fats
Digested food is absorbed through the walls of the small intestine into the blood stream
Digested food is carried by the blood to all parts of the body
Large intestine
No digestion happens here
Excess water and mineral salts are absorbed through the walls of the large intestine into the blood stream
Undigested food, faeces move into the rectum
Faeces store in the rectum and leave the body through the anus
