Women in Post-war America
Whats expected from marriage
Society changed during the 50s and 60s where some women were expected to stay in the home while others were not
Women gained more social freedoms like the ability to get into relationships for their own pleasures, or to divorce whenever they felt necessary
Many women are finding it more easy and acceptable to have a job while taking care of he home and the children
this has been called the masculinization of women
Many warned women about this lifestyle choice
Many people told wives they not only would they be ungratified, but that they would be ungratifying to their husbands
many suburban women felt repressed in their home with the roles that were expected of them
Some said that women and men both found enjoyment in working so both should be able to do so if they wished

African American Women
African American women were the less fortunate when it came to gender as well as race
African American males couldn't offer them any emotional security since they were oppressed themselves
It is unfortunate that although white slave owners before the Civil War weren't heavily criticized for their relations with black women when Black men are far more than just criticized for any attempted relations with white women
White men hide any relations or desires for black women by only taking advantage of them as prostitutes. Very few dare to commit to marriages or inform the public of their relationships
African American women just wanted their black male counterparts to accept them as equals
Abortions
Abortions were illegal and uncommon during this time
Many impoverished girls got pregnant at young ages
Doctors who agreed to perform abortions worked in sketchy places and were often afraid of being caught
Work
Some women still worked in factories or as cleaners in homes and for businesses
Some employers, who were typically men, got away with mistreating the women who worked for them and this left many women with the idea in their head that male bosses were evil
Some bosses were nice and accomodating for females who were doing all they could to support themselves or their families
