ATOMS AND ELEMENTS
The nucleus is in the middle of the atom. It contains
protons and neutrons. Protons are positively charged and Neutrons have no charge, they're neutral.
The electrons move around the nucleus, they're negatively charged. Small but cover lots of space.
-
Atoms have no charge overall, they're neutral.
COMPOUNDS
Atoms join together to make compounds. Making bonds involves atoms giving away, taking or sharing electrons.
Ionic bonding occurs between positive and negative ions, which attract each other and bind together to form ionic compounds.
A covalent bond is formed between non metal atoms, which combine together by sharing electrons. Covalent compounds have no free electrons and no ions so they don't conduct electricity.
USING LIMESTONE
Calcium Carbonate: CACO3
When Calcium Carbonate (CACO3) is heated it thermally decomposes to make calcium oxide and carbon dioxide.
-
Calcium Carbonate also reacts with acid to make a calcium salt, carbon dioxide and water:
Calcium Carbonate ---> Sulfuric Acid ---> Calcium Sulfate + Carbon Dioxide + Water
CaCO3 - H2SO4 - CaSO4 - CO2 - H20
