P- losing appetite, difficulty sleeping, earlier waking
I- cannot think positively, find it hard to make simple decisions and difficulty concentrating
E- feelings of unhappiness, losing interest, feeling useless, thinking of suicide, feeling restless
S- difficulty in starting complex things, feeling sad, avoiding contact with people

Risks

STRESS- may become distressed due to uncontrollable behaviour and also due to the stresses of life like work and medication
ABUSE- due to disruptive behaviour the person may experience abuse from managers, friends or family members as seen as vunerable
SOCIAL ISOLATION- may be left out of social situations by friends who are scared of persons behaviour

Barriers
EMPLOYMENT- lack of opportunities due to discrimination, lack of understanding, lack of flexibility
ECONOMIC- may have lack of income due to lack of employment opportunities, could also experience manic episodes which they could spend all saved up money at once
SOCIETAL- loss of social interaction during episodes of depression/mania and also relationship breakdowns

Causes
runs in families but not fully known. It is believed it is caused by a physical problem with the brain which controls moods. Has been found to be developed by traumatic events
Treatment
medicine like lithium can be used to reduce chances of manic episodes and being hydrated could help reduce side effects of the disorder
