Stockholm's Development and Urban Morphology
Morphology - the science of changing the city
Stockholm
Water is a problem for transportation - and not
Find the PURPUSE
We have lots of islands - we have to find ways to get through the islands.
Everything should be built 5 and 6 stories
Only the most prominent buildings stick out - the ones that historically matter
Diffuculties, problems, conflicts - in this case
Gamla Stan
1250-1630 - Medeltiden. We didn't have much population - a lot of disease.
The buldings are creating a form - a spacial pattern.
Our needs have changed. The central city, köpmangatan and stortorget were important then. But not they're not - we have turism for example
What are the roads showing? Organic, not very straight. Why are the roads different? The oldest parts are more oranic - the ones who are older are not - they are more straight. The reason for the roads form is because of the walls around - to protect it. But now it is not at important.
Roads - kullersten, cobble stones.
1630-1720 Swedens strongest period. We have a next ring around here.
Skeppsholmen - skeppsbron. Do you se the richness? Some of the buildings are sculptures - somebody had to do that. Marble in some of the buildings - smooth.
Riddarholmen - we don't build like this anymore - it costs too much. The roof is made out of copper.
1720-1870 Den förindustriella staden. Does not grow almost at all - we lose our power. Now we build nothing expensive.
1870-1910 Industrialisation - "I don't wanna live here anymore, its smelly polluted and noisy. So then we have the green areas "the garden city - trädgårdsstad".
1910-1930 We star developing around our railway areas, transportations roots.
1930-1945 We continue developing around the järnvägstationer.
19-60-1975 - We've got to extreme boundiers - we can live even further away.
1975-2000 - Pocket building, filling in green areas. Because they don't want urban sproll - infrastruktur and transportation - that's expensive.
Final project
Enskede - garden city. To get away from the citie - to live in a green area where they could live in a house. That's the ideology in 1910
Vällingby - you don't have do live anywhere else. You don't have to back into the city because you didn't need to. the prime minister lived out there - Palme. Vällingby was modern and unique. 1950
Kista - million programme. we have a lot of people moving in here - we have to created a lot of flats for people to live in.
Hammarby sjöstad - More sustainable ways
Four issues
The natural and physical structures- WHAT does it look like? e.g natural landscape, street patterns, building sizes and shapes, and architecture
The population make-up. WHO lives here? Are they educated? Whealthy? Lower class? e.g density, age strucutre, education
Types of functions provided in the area. Provide a MODEL (land use and distribution) Education in an area , where are the aparments, where is it expensive to live
spatial patterns, Provide a DIAGRAM. (patterns of distribution and the suburb's location in relation to the city or another suburb)
Project goal
Draw conclusions - why has it changed over time? What is the reasoning? The idea behind this project is not research - but reflecting.
How these four factors has affected the creation. E.g enskede was created 1910 - what was the thinking in 1910?
The past
The present
The future
Who is going to live here? Give predictions

Poster format
Visually appealing
Your using the space to create a clear message to what you are saying. USE PICTURES
The poster should portra a balance of graphical and textual elements
This is to be completed by creating a maximum of three statements (theses) and backing them up
For example
Well educated males were attracted to the area bacause of the cheap living area and the close proximity to the city
Well educated males - WHO
the were PAST
cheap living area WHAT
Proximity to the city - DIAGRAM
Show statistics
using a map and diagram to show the map how fast i takes to take the subway
using a picture to show the cheap buildings
then you can have a few points to explain the things that you're showing
Then you make another statement and do the same thing
