Impacts of Deforestation
Water Catchment
DEFINITION OF WATER CATCHMENT
Refers to an area drained by a river and the smaller rivers that flow into it.
forests enables water to be collected and stored within a water catchment area
HOW TROPICAL RAINFOREST CATCHES WATER
When rain falls, trees stop the water from reaching the gound
water will slowly drip from the tree, and seep into the ground
stored as groundwater
impurities in rainwater are trapped by the soil before water flows into reservoirs
it will provide clean water supply in a catchment area
LOSS OF WATER CATCHMENT AREAS
deforestation disrupts the water cycle
WATER CYCLE
trees absorb water through the roots
water is released into atmosphere through evaporation and transpiration
water in atmosphere will fall as rain again
without trees, the ground will not receive much water
RESULTS IN
drier climate and drier soils
water supply will decrease and water prices will increase
