Interdisciplinary Academic Pathways
Engineering & Technology
The engineering we learn can be applied to forensic science by investigation materials, products, structures or components that fail or do not operate intended, causing any personal injury or damage to property.
Math
It is impossible to be in the forensics field without knowing the proper math. Math while help you calculate how long the body has been in rigor mortise or the time of death.
Academic Literature
Academic Literature is necessary in the forensics field because it is important to have the ability to read and write while using proper grammar. This while be necessary when writing report, testifying in court etc.
Science
Physics
Physics will be applied when it comes to gun ballistics. For example equations will be applied to calculate the trajectory of a bullet.
In order to calculate fluid dynamics you need physics figure out the viscosity, surface tension, drag force and how that affects the blood that has left the body.
Using velocity will help figure out how vehicle collisions occurred. If a person collides with a vehicle the trajectory can be reconstructed which will depend on the position of the persons center of mass and the velocity of the car.
Will help figure out how falls from heights occurred. What we learned will help figure out gravity, frictional force and air resistance act on a body in fligh
Chemistry
Chemistry is the basis of forensic pathology and is a needed when it comes to toxicology and figuring out the content in the stomach and in the crime scene.
WEX/Health & Wellness
You cant be a forensic pathologist without being an actual doctor first. Since we learned CPR in this class it will be possible to apply in the field. You never know when a coworker can get hurt. This will also help me keep an eye on my health.
Mandarin
Mandarin can be very useful because it is important to be able to communicate with people from different backgrounds and languages.
Film
Film taught us how to be creative and how to not be afraid to express yourself and try new things. This can be helpful when one method inst working to solve the problem at hand and you have to try something new to figure it out.
TV Production & Broadcasting
This class is very useful because it teaches how to communicate in groups and work together.
AutoCAD
AutoCAD is useful because it teaches us about precision and create things which can be used if you have to recreate a crime scene or the trajectory of a bullet.
Introduction to Mechatronics
This class teaches us how to research the proper information and how to figure out things for ourselves.
WEX/Health & Wellness
Making sure I'm healthy is important so the company doesn't have to think of me as a liability if I come to work sick and work slower.
Film
Same as TV Production & Broadcasting, working in groups to complete projects is a very good skill to have
Mandarin
Being able to communicate among a group of people is a very important skill to have, and having multiple languages to communicate with is a huge asset especially companies with offshore locations.
TV Production & Broadcasting
This class teaches how to work together in groups, to finish a project, which is very useful to the workplace, being able to work together and finish a project efficiently.
Self Defense
Self defense is helpful because we can apply what we learned to see if the person fought back before they died or if a person killed someone in self defense. This class also teaches me how to defend myself which could be helpful when going out in the field to collect evidence, you never know what someone can do.
Self Defense
Being able to protect myself, keeping me healthy is important to make sure I keep working in an effective matter.
Science
Physics
Very important to understand, because if a company were to build a prosthetic, you would need to understand how movement and gravity will have an affect over time.
Chemistry
Extremely essential, in the sense that we need to know how the product we are using would react to human contact, and also needed to know for keeping certain things off the product, especially for prosthetics.
AutoCAD
CAD (Computer Aided Design) is an extreamly important tool for Biomedical Engineers, being that they need to make products that are very specifically shaped and with very specific dimensions, to be sent to manufacturing.
Engineering & Technology
Understanding Technology and engineering as a whole is very useful, engineering is the job, and Biomedical is a large section of engineering, so that is needed, and technology is also needed to be able to produce the product through programs like CAD more effectively, and in general for innovating.
Introduction to Mechatronics
This class teaches students to research and find answers to specific questions, which is a very essential skill to have, the ability to research effectively.
History
Having a broader and less bias view on the world is very important, especially for major companies that may offshore to different countries, where communicating would be very essential.
Academic Literature
Having the ability to read and write with proper grammar is very important, which will help communicate effectively and professionally among co-workers.
Math
Every engineering job involves math in some sort of way. With Biomedical Engineering, you need to work with math a lot while dimensioning products, and making minor adjustments with scaling, and also just the shape in general.
History
History will overlap with forensic pathology because history can involve learning about laws. Law will overlap with forensic pathology because you will be working with police lawyers and others in law enforcement.
