Reading Response 11 (Chapter Seven: "We Both Got Militant" UNION…

- - - - The middle of our book, consists of numerous photos that comprise influential individuals that are related to the educational field (Goldstein, 2014, p. 147)
      - Personal Connections :silhouette: I found this particular aspect of the book to be the most interesting. These photos offered greater insight into the issues that were happening in their time period. The captions and pictures offered a visual representation of the topics we have read thus far in the book.
      - Strikes!
        
        In the mid 1960's numerous racially charged strikers occurred in society. Many of these were based on educational injustices and unfairnesses (Goldstein, 2014, p. 151-154).
        
        Personal Connections :silhouette: School should be a learning environment with a caring atmosphere. It should not be based on race, creed, ethnical values, etc. I personally think that many local schools do a GREAT job of valuing multicultural viewpoints in the classroom. It is crazy to think that less than 100 years ago, our country was losing valuable teaching time to the numerous strikes and other racially charged actions / protests.
        
        Reagan Revolution
        
        Standards and accountability was the focus of this political agenda. The administration did not want public schools to be taught by the current staffing (Goldstein, 2014, p. 163).
        
        Personal Connections :silhouette: "They promoted a view of career public school teachers as professionally incompetent and insufficiently committed to closing racial and socioeconomic achievement gaps" (Goldstein, 2014, p. 163). I think the government should have been providing supplies, adequate training, and raising the requirements for teaching license before coming to this conclusion.
- - - - Black Teachers
        
        The unfair treatment of black teachers was disturbing to me. These educators were losing their job or put into unfair situations just as much as the students (Goldstein, 2014, p. 116-1)!
        
        Personal Connections :silhouette: I had always previously focused on the student perspective of segregation but I see how teachers would be at such a difficult place as well. The infamous sports movie, “Remember the Titans” discusses racism and segregating in the 1970’s. I kept playing scenes from this movie over and over in my head as I read this chapter.
        
        Teacher Corps
        
        This organization wanted more ethnically and racially diverse educators in the teaching field (Goldstein, 2014, p. 128-131).
        
        Personal Connections The :silhouette: personal recollections were emotional powerful and showed the true heart of a teacher.
      - Lyndon Johnson had a very different past than most presidents. His time as a teacher in Texas was eye opening to me. I did not know such facts as the ones our book stated. Many of the programs implemented failed or lacked statistical results. However, his Head Start program is one that I owe tribute to. I attended Head Start and I really contribute this aspect to my desire to become a teacher. This program offered social, mental, and physical programs that helped introduce me to educational activities (Goldstein, 2014, p. 114-117). :flag-us:
      - Personal Connections:silhouette: I did not know all of this background knowledge on Lyndon Johnson. However , I did know that he founded Head Start and his focus was on education. This book seemed to paint him in very poor light, but I do think that he had a passion for the people of the United States.
