Shortness of breath and chest tightness
Wheezing
Cough
Tachypnea and Tachycardia
Pulsus paradoxus-a decrease in BP during inspiration
Hypoxemia
Hypercapnia and respiratory acidosis
Bronchial hyperresponsiveness
DESCRIPTION
Greater intensity in the signs and symptoms of asthma and subsiding relatively shortly with treatment
EPIDEMIOLOGY
Introduction of a new allergen sensitivity
Sudden and severe worsening of chronic asthma
Treatment
SABAs ex: albuterol
Corticosteriods IV or nebulized in the ER with an oral does for 3-5 days post acute asthma attack
Oxygen (typically given in a healthcare environment ex: hospital)
TESTS
Arterial Blood Gas - Typically will show first alkalosis then a drop to acidosis(pH)
CBC - may show esonphils
Chest X-ray for rule out purposes
