MATTER
Composed of elements, compounds and mixtures
All substances occupy space and have mass, this is called matter
WHAT ARE ATOMS?
Tiny particles that all matter is made up of
Atoms are so tiny that millions and millions of them are in a grain of sand
Even the strongest electron microscope cannot see a clear image of single atoms
Different kinds of atoms
Can join together in chemical reactions to form molecules
ELEMENTS
Over a hundred known elements (keeping being added)
Not all are found on Earth; some are man-made
E.g. carbon, gold, silver, copper, oxygen, etc
Elements are
pure substances
whose
atoms are identical
Pure substances that cannot be made into anything chemically simplier
SYMBOLS OF ELEMENTS
Symbols always start w/ an upper-case letter. Some have two letters but the second is always lower-case
Not all elements were discovered at the same time (a few named in 2016)
Every element has its own international symbol; short way to write the element's name
