Peace and Conflict
Family
- Causes of Conflict within families
- Social behaviour-drinking alcohol, socialising with members of the opposite sex
- Moral issues-Cohabiting with a partner or choosing to have and abortion
- Jobs and careers-Certain careers could conflict with religious teachings
- Choice of boyfriend/girlfriend-especially if they are from another faith
- Raising children-Society and times have changed and older generations may hold different views
War
Just War Theory
-
- There is a reasonable chance of success
- It is fought with the aim of bringing peace
- It is a last resort after non-violent methods have failed
- No innocent civilians will be killed
- The cause of the war is just such as resisting injustice
- The methods use are reasonable
Christian attitudes
- Jesus taught obedience should be shown to the government
- Sometimes violence is necessary in response to invasion as agreed by the catholic church to bring peace
- Lesser of two evils "Blessed are the peace makers"- sometimes war is necessary in order to find peace
- It is right to have armed forces to protect nations
-
- Absolute pacifism-No engagement in military action
- Relative pacifism-No engagement in military action under certain circumstances
- The Ten Commandments forbid killing
- Jesus taught that people should "Love their enemies"
- Jesus stopped his own followers from using violence "If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also”
- Nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction cause unimaginable suffering
Muslim Attitudes
Greater Jihad- This is the struggle that Muslims face within themselves in order to bring them closer to God. For example doing good deeds and attending mosque
Lesser Jihad- The struggle with forces outside of the body which may mean a physical struggle or war
- The Qu’ran teaches Muslims must fight if they are attacked. “Fight in the case of God who fight you, but do not transgress the limits; for God does not love the transgressor” (Surah 2:190)
- Mohammed himself fought in wars
- Muhammed's statements in the Hadith permit a just war
- The Qur'an says that any Muslim who dies in war will go straight to Al-Janah (Heaven)
- Islam means "Peace" in Arabic
- Modern Wars do not fit the conditions of lesser jihad laid down in the Qur’an. For example, the almost unavoidable loss of civilian life in modern conflicts and the use of biological, chemical and nuclear weapons cannot be compatible with Muslim teachings
- Only non-violence can achieve peace in the end, organisations such as Islamic Relief emphasise this
- War only leads to more violence
Bullying
Christian Attitudes
While all Christians are against bullying some think it should be treated less harshly than others because:
- Studies show that bullies have often been victims of bullying themselves
- Bullies might have low self esteem or have problems at home or at school and therefore they may need help to reform
- People make mistakes, sometimes people are not aware that they're bullying
-
- "God created man in his own image" and therefore all human life should be respected equally
- "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Jesus said we should treat others as we would want to be treated.
- The parable of the sheep and the goats reminds christians that they will be judged based on how they act in their life and how they treat people
Muslim Attitudes
-
- All human life was created by Allah and is sacred and it is wrong to abuse Allah's creation
- The Hadith teaches that all people within the Ummah are equal
- All muslims that are able must give 2.5% of their earnings to charity as it is important to protect the weak and vulnerable, not attack them
- Bullying causes harm and is therefore haram meaning final judgement won't go their way
