UNDERGRADUATES PERCEPTION OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY COURSES AT TERTIARY LEVEL (MAIN IDEA)
INTRODUCTION
English language is an important language that the undergraduates are exposed to in their study at tertiary level.
ABSTRACT
Proficiency in English language courses at tertiary level benefits undergraduate as individual and also future workforce.
RELEVANT SCHOLARSHIP
English is recognized and used as the language of living and learning.
Graduates polled said that they were unemployed because they had poor English language and communication skills.
Major challenges to teachers as the teaching and learning contexts change because of new technologies and incresing diversities of people.
Graduates are not only qualified in their field but also have the ability to communicate.
FOCUS OF THE STUDY
Investigate the undergraduates perception of the English language courses that are offered at tertiary level.
METHOD
Participant Characteristics
The participants in the study were 130 students of different races.
Sampling Procedures
The number of samples with MUET result is less than the total number of samples.
Research Design
Methodology used in the research was a survey questionnaire.
RESULTS
Attitude Toward English
Majority of the respondents are motivated intrinsically to attend the English language courses.
English is an important subject.
Note that a high level of intrinsic motivation exist in the undergraduates for their self improvement and betterment.
Self Assessment
Note that the most important skill is speaking.
Learning Of English
Objective of the E.L course
English language courses do help them to improve their English language proficiency.
Teaching methodology in the E.L classroom
Reflect teacher domination in terms of communication and talk time in the English language classroom.
Teaching and learning activities
These activities actually interest the students more and could be more beneficial in helping the undergraduate improve their language proficiency as well as enjoy the language class.
Teaching and learning of English
It was evident that teachers gave clear instruction.
Material
In terms of the skills being given priority in the module/book, reading skill had the highest rating.
Open ended Question
The center need to identify the language weakness of the students and implement sustainable measures to improve the English language proficiency level of undergraduates.
RECOMMENDATION
Some recommendation are provided to supplement the open ended comments and reflection from the participants.
CONCLUSION
There is many advantages of English language for undergraduates.
