Will power and work motivation
Direction, intensity and persistence
Self regulation: Refrain from impulsive tendencies and behave rationally
Cool system: cognitive, strategic
Hot system: emotional, impulsive and reflexive
Ego depletion: exerting self regulation consumes resources and reduces the amount of resources left for subsequent self-control efforts
Regulatory focus
Promotion focus - emphasize on growth and opportunity, pursuit of positive outcomes
Prevention focus - emphasize safety and security, minimization of negative outcomes
Promotion focus: focus on ideals and aspirations / "gain" as success, "non-gain" as failure
Prevention focus: focus on duties and obligations / "non-loss" as success, "loss" as failure
Goal-setting theory: specific and difficult goals together with feedback lead to higher performance
Goals should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Results oriented, Time bound
Self efficacy: an individual's belief that he or she is capable of performing a task
Enactive mastery: practicing and gaining relevant experience
Vicarious modelling: gaining confidence by seeing someone else perform the task successfully
Verbal persuasion: gaining confidence because someone convinces you that you have the relevant skills
Arousal: an energized state that allows one to complete a task
Goal orientation
Learning goal orientation: opportunity to acquire new skills and knowledge
Performance goal orientation: demonstrating performance to prove competence and avoid failure
Expectancy theory: one's motivation to engage in a task
