        A nation's economy is crucial during total war, so if supplies are cut off or if the economy is otherwise weakened, that will hinder a nation's ability to fight in the war.
        
        Propaganda: the spreading of an idea in order to support a cause or damage an opposing cause
        Propaganda in World War I was designed to encourage people to enlist. This ensured total war because more people were willing to join it.
- - - - Effect: Russia's withdraw had an immediate impact. Germany could now focus all of its resources on the Western front instead of being divided by Russia. This strengthened the Central Powers, making victory for the Allies harder than they thought it would be.
- - - - Shared cultural ties made the US side with Britain and France. However, several groups of people would have rather sided with the Central Powers. German Americans favored Germany, Irish Americans resented British rule of Ireland, and Russian Jewish Americans did not want to be allied with the tsar.
    - - Germany resumed its policy of unrestricted submarine warfare to break the stalemate in 1917, angering president Wilson.
    - - After months of training and preparation, American troops joined the Allies in 1918, although few actually fought in combat. The Americans gave the Allies a long needed boost in morale.
