Infectious mononucleosis syndromes can be caused by several different pathogens (eg. EBV, cytomegalovirus, HIV, Toxoplasma gondii). Present with fever, malaise, sweats, anorexia, nausea, chills, sore throat, posterior cervical lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, and a maculopapular rash, especially after the administration of ampicillin, should undergo an evaluation for Epstein-Barr virus–associated infectious mononucleosis.
The rash is usually over the trunk but can involve the extremities, including the hands and feet
