The Problem
French Kings kicked the English Kings out in 1337.
English Kings were considered nobles of France and vassals of the French King-had land in France.
English King Edward III then claimed right to the throne.
The French Kings didn't like this...so they started working to get their land back.
Caroline Era (1369-1389)
No real change in territory (1376: Black Prince died (illness)
Peace treaties signed in 1389 (French got to keep any territory they had gained.
Charles V (France-1362) (1369: tried to recapture land to England in Treaty of Bretigny)
Lancastrian Era (1415-1453)
France was week; King Charles VI was mentally ill
Agincourt; Henry captured Harfleur-on to Calais but stopped at Agincourt; English longbow helped him to fend off the French.
1415: English King Henry V-attacked France and made claim to the throne.
1420: Henry V forces Charles VI to name him his heir, married his daughter Catherine, and deemed his son Charles VII illegitimate (still fought the English).
1422: Henry V dies-conflict continues.
Orleans: Joan of Arc, major setback for the English.
1453: French successful; English only has coast of Calais (would hold until
