Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva
Implications on movement on exercise
Movement is completely inhibited
Respiratory system affected intercostal muscles ossified preventing movement
Exercise will be extremely tough
Biomechanically all levers and joint movements will not function efficiently
Any kinds of movement will be completely inhibited
Proprioceptive movement is completely nullified as receptors are surrounded by bone
Effects of the body
Causes skeletal muscle to undergo metamorphosis
Reduces mobility completely and effects breathing, eating and moving
Ankylosis
Stiffening of joints due to increased bone in areas of connective tissue
Joint stiffness begins in the neck and works way down the body
Fasia and aponeuroses are connective tissue which are effected
More prone to respiratory illnesses
Progressive mobility impairment
Swelling due to bone growth pressing on lymphatic vessels
Any form of muscular trauma will lead to further swelling and inflammation which could cause more rapid ossification in the area affected
Compressed nerves and spinal fusion

Disorder where muscle and connective tissue become ossified and form bone

Very rare inherited condition
1 in 2 million
Abnormal bone development of bone in areas where it shouldn't develop heterotopic ossification (bone outside of the skeletal system)
Characterised by malformed big toes at birth
Congenital Phase
FOP is caused by the mutation of a gene in the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) pathway, which is important during the formation of the skeleton in the embryo and the repair of the skeleton following birth.
Gene causing mutation as amino acid is swapped changing code of protein which is then interpreted differently by the BMP receptors
treatment
No treatment to alleviate condition only to reduce swelling and pain caused
occupational therapy and special equipment to assist with movement
