"Dulce et Docorum Est" uses kinetic images of the shocking experience of watching a young man dying in a gas attack. Thos terrifying image which is conjured suggests that the soldiers were not just tired but they had reached the end of their strength. Soldiers are not marching, they are so tired that they have to drag their body. Opening stanza, creates the image of soldier during war, which is far removed from the honorable, chivalrous, romanticized image of the soldier. The soldier looks tired, old, broken down physically crippled by this experience. It is ironic that these old and weak beggars are infact young men, in their prime time, fighting for their country.
