Natural Selection Notes 3/20/17
Natural Selection
A man called Ken Koehler, who was very ill and suffering intense stomach pain
Doctors examined him until they found the bacterium called Salmonella typhimurium
After several tries they finally were able to cure him and they traced the disease all the way back to ground beef.
Doctors also tried 9 other antibiotics that normally kill the same disease, but failed to kill the disease which meant that the disease had mutated.
Process of Natural Selection
Adaptations result from mutations in an organisms DNA.
Sometimes a mutation produces a trait that helps the individual survive.
The offspring are likely to inherit the trait.
Blue Moon Butterflies
The butterflies are affected by a bacteria called Wolbachia
The male species jumped form 1 percent to 39 percent.
The male butterflies inherited a mutation that Wolbachia was of no effect toward them.
The males butterflies produced more with females so the whole population grew.
Salmonella Typhimurium
Salmonella can be found in cows.
When a cow gets sick they treat the cow with antibiotics, but scientist gave the cow a antibiotics to prevent illness and to make the cows grow faster.
Because bacteria with antibiotic resistance are not killed by the antibiotics, they quickly produce large a large population antibiotic- resistant bacteria.
When Ken touched the food he ate the bacteria was going on the food and then traveling down his intestines making him more sick.
