Session 1
Definition
- anything that has matter
- composed of atoms
Classes
-
Pure
substances
-
Compounds/
molecules
-
-
-
-
have definite, constant, elemental composition

-
Atoms
-
-
-
eletrically neutral
number of protons = number of electrons
number of neutrons = mass number - atomic number
Isotopes
same atomic number but a different mass number
same number of protons and electrons, but different numbers of neutrons

Measurement
-
number and appropriate unit
- Australia - metric
- International - SI system
expressed in 2 ways
standard/decimal notation
- expression of a number using a decimal point
- 3.87
scientific notation
- expresses a decimal notation as times 10 raised to a positive (greater than 10) or negative power (less than 1)
- 3.87 x 10-1
Dalton's Atomic Theory
- all matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms
- atoms are in constant motion
- all atoms of the same element are identical
- atoms of any one element are different from those of any other element
- atoms form molecules = a tightly bound group of atoms that act as a unit
- atoms are never created/destroyed during a chemical reaction - can only be rearranged, separated or combined
- there are empty spaces between the particles of matter that are very large compared to the particles themselves
