General properties of waves
Types of waves
Transverse waves
: waves that travel perpendicular to the direction of the vibration
Longitudinal waves
: waves that travel parallel to the direction of the vibration
Definition: a process of transferring energy from one location to another which is produced by an oscillating or vibrating motion.
wave terms
wave length
ampiltude
period
frequency
speed
Formulas
[F=1/T] F=frequency (Hz) T=period (s)
[V=f x lander] V=wavespeed (m/s) lander=wavelength(mm)
wavefront
imaginary line on a wave that joins all adjacent points that are in phase
Refraction of wave
Takes place when they change the direction of their movement at a certain angle to a boundary of different depth of water
Reflection of wave
It is the wave undergoing a change in direction of propagation when it is bounced off. When a wave is reflected, its frequency, speed and wavelength remains the same
