Hitler's Actions after coming to power in 1933 up to Czechoslovakia
Remilitarisation of Rhineland
If Hitler failed, he would lose support of German army
Demilitarisation of Rhineland one of terms of Versailles
March 1936, Hitler took risk by moving troops into Rhineland
Hitler had risks but chose his time well:
Hitler knew Britain felt he had the right to put troops in Rhineland
France just signed agreement with USSR to protect each other if attacked by Germany, Hitler used this to say he was under threat.
Troops moved into Rhineland
Attention of LofN in Abyssinia
French were divided on what to do
They were about to hold an election
No French leaders wanted to plunge France into war
However, Germany, who's army had no weapons got away with it, leaving Hitler thinking he could have more
Rearmament
Unemployed workers went to army
Began in secret at first, then left LofN
1935 Hitler staged a military rally
1936 he introduced conscription
Breaking Versailles- but got away with it
He claimed he rearmed as other countries refused to disarm
Rearmament popular - helped Nazi support
Britain had sympathy as limits put on Germany were too tight
They also thought strong Germany would be good buffer vs Communism
They signed a naval agreement with Germany 1935 so that the German Navy was 35% of Britain's navy size
Saar Plebiscite
Saar ran by LofN since 1919
1935 - vote by LofN to see if Saar should be returned to Germany
Hitler was worried he would not win as his opponents fled to the Saar
Hitler used Goebbels to launch propaganda mission
90% voted for German rule
After this Hitler declared he had 'no further territorial demands to make of France
Spanish Civil War
1936 - between Republican gov and right-wing rebels led by General Franco
Important as it gained an international dimension
Stalin supported Republicans - Hitler and Mussolini joined the rebels
Mussolini sent troops, Hitler sent aircraft
Hitler's aircraft took part in bombing raids
So the war encouraged Hitler to reverse Versailles
War strengthened bonds between Hitler and Mussolini
Republicans won the war (thanks to Hitler)
Modern weapons convinced Chamberlain war should be avoided at all costs
Anschluss 1938
Mein Kampf states Germany and Austria should be united
Some Austrians supported one nation as Austria was economically weak
Hitler wanted a "greater Germany"
Nazis in Austria caused riots
Hitler told Schuschnigg that Anschluss would sort the problems
Schuschnigg called for referendum
Hitler was not prepared to lose, sent troops to Austria - 99.75% voted for Anschluss
Once again Britain and France's reluctance to go to war caused Hitler to gain confidence
Militarism and the Axis
Japan ruled by General Tojo
They wanted to expand their empire
1937 Japan invade China
Hitler saw similarities between him and Tojo so signed Anti-Comintern pact known as the axis alliance
