Lab 4, 2a: Due to the current state of our world's environment, we must look to develop effective alternatives to proven environmentally harmful energy sources.
pathos
Lab 4, 2b: Characters I would use in my technical/field essay would include significant characters in the area of developing alternative energy sources. Someone like the founder of Tesla or someone that has a lot of knowledge on the topic.
Lab 5, 2b:
http://science.sciencemag.org/content/301/5635/929.fullThis source talks about how climate change is affecting the coral reefs of the world. Future generations will not be able to see these in real life if climate continues to change this way. Also, these effect the ecosystem in many ways and are needed by the species of fish that live near/in them. Could also be a source talking about the shrinking polar ice caps and how that effects the polar bears and other animals of that environment.

Lab 4, 2e: My topic is crucial to share with a wide audience because it describes something that affects all of us. The global climate can change how any person lives in the world. If we continue to let the climate go in the direction it is going in, we might have to change how we live drastically. If we make little changes here and there right now, then we might still be able to save some aspects of our current way of life.
Dear Bobby Magill,Hello, my name is Geno, and I am a mechanical engineering student at the University of Nevada, Reno. I am writing you to inquire about renewable energy sources and their benefits for the world. I have read your article on renewables being a key to better health and it raised some questions I think you will find interesting. I would very much appreciate it if you could find the time to write back to me in response to my questions. Please let me know if I could ask another expert these questions.Sincerely,
Geno Brown

Lab 4, 1: I believe Kolbert uses a combination of the structures called the "inverted pyramid" and the "sections structure". She uses the inverted pyramid by ending her story with strong details and starting it off with less important details. The sections structure can be seen by how she separates her story in different sections. She has a beginning, middle, and ending all including different details that introduce the topic, detail the topic, and resolve her story. The combination of these two structures is an impactful way to organize an essay.
ethos
Lab 4, 2c: The professional or expert that strikes me as the most credible or powerful in making the film's point is the last speaker in the clip. This speaker leaves the audience with their last thought about the topic. Having this speaker last would allow the audience to think mostly about what she would have to say.
Lab 4, 2c: I would demonstrate ethos in my essay by citing my sources or using credible sources. By citing someone that is credible on the topic, the ethos in my essay would increase. I would also demonstrate ethos in my essay by citing facts or statistics.
Lab 5, 2c:
http://www.ucsusa.org/clean-energy/renewable-energy This source talks about many different types of renewable energy that people have already started to use. It talks about the technology, benefits, and challenges that goes with each different technique.
Lab 5, 2c:
http://www.solarschools.net/resources/stuff/advantages_and_disadvantages.aspxHere is a source that talks about the advantages and disadvantages of renewable energy. The disadvantages could be accredited to not having quality techniques for creating renewable energy since they talk about not being able to create enough. Working harder to designing and coming up with newer and more efficient ways for renewable energy could eliminate these disadvantages.
Lab 5, 2c:
http://www.renewableenergyworld.com/index/tech/why-renewable-energy.htmllThis source comes from a website full of sources that talk about types of renewable energies. I have included this source because it is a credible source that talks about the benefits of using renewable energy sources. It even talks more about how the sources can benefit more than just our environment.
Lab 5, 2c:
https://climate.nasa.gov/evidence/This is a source from a truly known and trusted source showing the evidence of climate change. Climate change is a result from things like the greenhouse effect which are heavily influenced by switching to renewable energy. A very credible source to show that renewable energy sources are needed.

Lab 5, 2d:
http://www.ucsusa.org/clean-energy/coal-and-other-fossil-fuels/hidden-cost-of-fossilsThis source talks about the many different ways we damage our environment now. All these ways could have alternatives by using renewable energy. It goes in depth to talk about each different aspects of separate things people do to damage the environment. This will support my claim by showing the damaging aspects of not using renewable energy,
Lab 4, 2d: I will use a structure similar to how I thought Kolbert structured her essay. I would use the structure called "sections structure" defined in the reading "Writing the Compelling Investigation". Combining this structure with the "inverted pyramid structure" would allow me to start my essay strongly with introducing the topic and finishing with my hardest facts that leave the audience with something to think about. This could also be considered a "call to action" for the audience. My most important details will also include details on how the audience could get involved.
Lab 5, 2e:
http://www.climatecentral.org/news/renewables-benefit-climate-public-health-19397In this source, an important figure from Climate Central writes about the health benefits of renewable energy. This would support my claim by showing how it helps us humans survive longer and live healthier lives by having renewable energy. It also shows that there is a possibility that the way we live is harmful for us and there is a proven way to live healthier.
I thought this was Lab 6
Introduction:
D'Agata leads his essay by discussing the death of Levi and how it draws attention to the surrounding situation. He goes into detail about heads of organizations relating to the incident and how they have nothing to share or do to help the situation in any way.
Detailed Investigation:
After his introduction, D'Agata goes into specific details about the people surrounding the suicide situation. From casino owners to the coroner, D'Agata interviews many people to see what they have to say about the suicide. He does not get much answers in return.
Structure:
In the way that D'Agata structures his essay, he introduces the situation, goes forward to talk about the people surrounding the situation, talks bout what is happening in regards to it, and then goes back to discuss the event that started it. This structure brings emphasis to how his death should be seen and what it could mean by putting it at the end. Also, talking about what is being done in response to the death right before may add to what the reader has to think about.
Response:
D'Agata even goes so far to get some experience from a suicide hotline in Las Vegas just to see how it could have affected the situation. As he goes through this, he can see the flaws of the system as well as the benefits. Because D'Agata is an essayist and not a reporter, most of his reporting should not be considered fully legitimate. Regardless, many of his details in investigation seem very researched.
Conclusion:
D'Agata's conclusion brings us back to the day that started the whole situation. He walks us through the day that Levi actually jumped from the Stratosphere. From the moment he got home and slept to the next afternoon where it happened, D'Agata describes almost every detail that might have been related to what Levi did.
Lab 6, 5:
Detail:
I may be able to add certain devices to make my structure more interesting. Devices such as foreshadowing or a more specific structure. These may make my essay more interesting to read and emphasize a point further than what is already done.
Structure:
In my essay I use a simple structure to emphasize the important details that will bring readers to action. I start by introducing the topic and how it affects everyone, then I go on to talk about what is already being done to stop it, and lastly I discuss what can be done about the topic.
Call to Action:
A call to action in my essay can be seen through the use of pathos and in the conclusion. The use of pathos may make the reader's see the emotional side of the topic and what the consequences of no action will be. By showing future goals and how they can be accomplished, the audience may be able to actively seek more information on the topic.
