Electrical Currents
-
A circuit consists of battery, two electrodes, wires and electrolytic solution.
Positve ions move towards the cathode (pick up electrons). Negative ions move towards anode (give up electrons)
-
-
Voltage drives the flow of current: current flow through a conductor is proportional to the difference across it
-
-
Types of current
Alternating (AC): continuous flow of charged particles in two directions. Polarity is reversed continuously between the two electrodes
Sinusoidal current
Pulsed (PC): periodic interruptions in current flow
Unidirectional or bidirectional / symmetrical or asymmetrical
Direct (DC): flow of electrons in only one direction
Therapeutic use: stimulate denervated muscle, iontophoresis and wound healing
Patient tolerance can be an issue as it is uncomfortable
Burn risk: ions build up under skin
