Skin Structure
-Made up of three layers
Epidermis (Outer Layer)
-Outermost and thinnest most layer of skin -The most outside part of the epidermis consist of dead skin cells -Epidermis cells produce a chemical called Meldin that changes your skin color when exposed ultraviolet rays -Lighter skin burns more easily and is suseptible to skin canser
Dermis(Middle Layer)text
-Directly below epidermis -Tickest Layer -Contains blood vessels, nerves , muscles, oil, sweat, glands, and other structures -
-
Skin Functions
-Protects the body from physical and chemical injury -sensory response -Forms vitamins D -Regulates temperature and rides body of wastes
Vitamin D
-Ultraviolet light activates a molecule in your epidermis to produce Vitamin D -Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium into your blood from food in your digestive track
Heart and waste Exchange
-Skin is used to regulate body temperature -blood vessels expand to release heart and constrict to retain heat -Dremis has about 3 million sweat glands -when blood vessels expand sweat moves out onto the skin.Heart transfers to the sweat, evaporate and cools the skin
Injuries and Repair
-Skin is often bruised ,scratched, burned, ripped, and exposed to harsh conditions -skin produces new cells in the epidermis and repairs tears in the dremis -Skin is disease causing organisms when injured
Bruises
-Result when blood vessels in the demis burst - red blood cells leak into surrounding tissue -Hemoglobin in blood breaks down and releases pigments that causes the skin to change color -Pigment is gradually absorbed into the bloodstream and skin being to look normal again
Cuts
-Blood is released from the tear or cut until it clots and scabs -Cells fight off infections while skin cells try to repair the dremis and epidermis -Scars may form if the cut is large enough and the healing results in thick tissue
Skin Grafts
-If a cut tear or other injury is to large there may not be enough cells to property heal the skin -Skin is taken from other parts of the body to help and treat the injured sections
