Enclosure Act in Great Britain
The Enclosure act was an act by the government that closed down common land on properties to create one big farm and was made by United Kingdom Acts of Parliament in 1730.
Positive consequences: Larger farms more food or goods for the people of England. Higher food production led to more money and lower prices.
Negative consequences: People might lose their land and not have a place to live, and they may need to now spend money in order to buy food.
In 1730
Rotherham plow was invented by Joseph
Foljambe. It had an iron blade.
Its design made it lighter
and easier to use while requiring
only two horses and one plower.
Benefit: cutting labor costs
and saving time
The 1730's
Turnip Townshend introduced crop rotation system to Britain. Crop rotation is growing a particular group of crops on a different part of the large field each year.
Positive: Farmers didn't have to slaughter beast before winter because there was more food for them to eat.
People became healthier. The crop rotation also increased production
Negative Slaves and peasents had to go to the city for jobs because job opportunities decreased.

James Hargreaves invented the Spinning Jenny. It
spins cotton into thread very quickly
Positive It sped the thread making business and it lowered prices.
Negative Workers salary decreased and some lost their jobs.

Richard Arkwright invented the water frame. It
used water to power spinning machines
Positive Decreased the level of pollution
Negative It cannot be used anywhere

James Watt invented the steam engine
replacing the waterpower
Positive Allowed factories to be built anywhere
Negative A steam engine is unsafe to use because the boiler can explode because of excessive steam pressure.
1785
Edmund Cartwright invented the power loom. It wove the thread into cloth.
Positive: Increased the speed of cloth-making

Kids were sent to textile factories. If they did something wrong or slept during work, they were beaten.
Because of the increase of food, the population grew.

Positive Consequences
- Peasants didn't have to work all day
- Increased division of labor, families no longer had to make their own food, clothing, and shelter
- The huge middle class took time to enjoy leisure activities
- Men kept working in factories
- Women began to look after home
- children went to school
WHY? Industrialism started in Britian because Britain had a huge amount of coal, huge population, an interest in science and a strong economy.
Negative Consequences
- People lost jobs
- Children were killed because of child labor.
- Huge increase in population
- Increase in death rate
