Types of truth
-
Historical
We know that something is historically true when we can use evidence from the past to prove that something happened.
It can be easy to prove that something happened, but it is more difficult to understand why.
Religious
When religious believers make claims about the origin of the Universe, they usually reference their religious texts and teachings.
-
It can be difficult to establish truth in religion because most religious scriptures were written a long time ago.
Absolute
Absolute truth is a term given to something which is true, and cannot ever be proved false.
-
Evolving/changing truth
What we perceive to be truth changes over time. It depends on the knowledge and discoveries of the time.
The Big Bang theory
-
Definition
-
According to the theory, the Universe as we know it starting with a small singularity, then inflated over the next 13.8 billion years to the cosmos that we know today.
Religious responses
Fundamentalists disagree with the Big Bang because it goes against their beliefs that the world was created by God.
Liberal religious believers sometimes accept the Big Bang theory because they think that their religious scriptures are non-literal and are open to interpretation.
Muslims accept the Big Bang theory. Their creation story is that everything that exists is evidence of Allah's creation, and that the Big Bang is therefore evidence of Allah.
Some believers think that creation stories are myths, and is not strictly true historically.
Evolution
-
Definition
Evolution is the most commonly accepted theory as to how modern animals and plants became what they are.
-
Controversy
Darwin's theory caused a lot of controversy and his ideas were only gradually accepted. Some people do not believe them today.

However, scientific developments changed the way people thought about God's place in the Universe
Notable figures
