Melody
Improvised from notes of a particular rag. Sung or played by an instrument such as sitar or sarod
There are over 200 different rags
Each rag has a particular mood (called a rasa)
There are morning and night rags, rags for different seasons and also rags for celebrations.
Rag desh is traditionally played at night and is also known as a monsoon (rainy season) rag.
Drone (harmony)
no real harmony in Indian raga music
drone supports the melody
one or two notes played by tambura
usually the tonic and dominant notes of the chosen rag (sa and pa)
the drone gives a sense of intonation (tuning) as a reference point for the melodic part
Rhythm
based on a repeating rhythmic cycle called a tala
many different talas with different numbers of beats
each beat is called a matras
first beat of the pattern is called sam
complex rhythms are improvised around the tala (called bols)
