With the slave trade, there was a huge increase in death and a huge drop in the number of people that were living in Africa; people died from disease or malnutrition.
This issue would also effect the economy and Africa's ability to develop. Population wouldn't be the only thing that effected the economy (war also affected it), but it could be a factor.
