OSHA's Machine Guarding
29CFR 1910.212
:warning:
#
Guard Type:
Barriers etc. must be provided to protect people from point of operation hazards
General requirement for MG:
Guards are affixed to machine. They do not cause hazards themselves
Guard point of operation:
Any point of operation expose a person to injury must be guarded. prevent machine operator from nom their body
Exposure of blades:
Fans must be guarded if less than 7' above floor or working level
Anchor fixed machinery:
Big ass machine designed to be in one place must be securely anchored to prevent movement
Requirement for all safeguards
Be secure and durable:
workers ain't able to render
Prevent Contact:
Safeguard should prevent human contact with harmful machine parts
Protect against falling objects:
Safeguards shield moving parts of machine from falling objects
Create no new hazard:
Safeguards with sharp edges, protruding bolts etc. are a big no no as they create new hazard
Create no interference:
obviously
Types of POO operation
Interlocked Guards
Shut down machine when guard not in place
Allow safe access to machine
May be easily disengaged
Adjustable guards
Prevent against various hazard
Don't provide dependable barrier as other guards
Fixed guards
may limit visibility and normal cleaning maintenance
suitable for high production, repetitive opetations
permanent barrier between worker & POO
POO Devices
Photoelectric
Shut down machine whenever light field is broken . don't protect against mech failure, can only be used with machines that can be stopped
Radio Frequency
Capacitance devices that stop the machine if capacitance field is interrupted by the workers body or other object
