Hi Kay,These are great questions, and there are a number of books I can suggest to get you started:Ruth Wilson Gilmore, Golden Gulag: Prisons, Surplus, Crisis, and Opposition in Globalizing California
Eric Tang, Unsettled: Cambodian Refugees in the NYC Hyperghetto
Mike Davis, City of Quartz: Excavating the Future in Los Angeles
George Lipsitz, "Policing Place and Taxing Time in Skid Row" in Policing the Planet (eds. Camp and Heatherton)Gilmore will give you the best overview; it's a challenging work but it's already becoming a classic in prison studies that looks at prison expansion in the 1980s in the context of deindustrialization. Tang touches on much of what I discussed in lecture, looking at Cambodian refugees in the Bronx in the 1980s-90s. Lipsitz is a great short article I actually just assigned in my other class, that looks at the impact of neoliberal corporatization in LA and its impact on houseless people of color living in Skid Row.Best,Prof Man
