Roger could also be said to show the effect of policing/consequences. He may represent the army or a police force . Where Jack succeeds as a leader is because there is consequences to breaking his rules and people are afraid of this consequence (Roger) therefore do what he says. He uses fear to control people.

Roger represents the darker side of humans that is present in everyone. However, there is no one to stop him on the island so he takes it much further than in a 'civilised' society. Shows what happens when the evil side of humans is let loose.
Golding gives the reader barely any description of what Roger looks like only that he is dark and brooding which adds to his mysterious character
