Thermography
is a technique for imitating an ebrossesed appearance by dusting printed areas with a powder that adheres only to the wet ink and fuses the ink and powered to the paper by heat. Used on business cards and stationery.
Imposition
Is one of the fundamental steps in the prepress printing process, consitst in the arrangement of the printed products pages on the printers sheet in order to obtain faster printing, simplify binding and reduce paper waste.
Scoring and perforating
Scoring referes to the process in which a crease is applied to paper stocks and other substrates. Perforation alows a document to be seperated into smaller portions of the whole and they allow document to be folded easily.
Folding
Folding is a way that is used to bend over on itself so that one part of it covers another. This term is sed in graphic design to bed papers to create brochures
Embrossing
Embrossing is a term that molds and reshapes a paper by te use of a special metal that dies and heat, the counter dies and pressure to produce a raised image on the paper surface.
Die cutting
Die Cutting is a term that explains the procces of cutting paper in a shape or design by te use of wooden die or a block that is positioned steel rules in the shape of the desired pattern
Stitching
Saddle Stitch is a term similar to stitching - it is the process of the binding of booklets or other printed materials by stapling the pages on the folded spine.
-
Varnishing
Varnishing is a term that is a clear coating added to printed material as a protective layer for improved scuff resistance and usually higher gloss.
Blocking (Foil Stamping)
Blocking is when ink or a coating causes the prints of paper in a pile to stick together, therefore causing damage when they are separated.

Printing
Screen printing
force ink or metal on to through a prepared screen of fine material so as to create a picture or pattern
-
Cost
The average cost for screen printing a shirt is $3.50 for each screen on the shirt without any colour
Letter Press
Letterpress printing is the oldest and one of the most exquisite forms of printing available. it is centuries old art form, which is timeless, classic and results in a beautiful tactile impression into the paper.
-
is a technique of relief printing using a printing press, where many copies are produced by repeated direct impression of an inked, raised surface against sheets or a continuous roll of paper. a worker composes and locks movable type into a 'bed' or 'chase' of a press inks it, and presses paper against it to transfer the ink from the type which creates an impression on the paper.

RotoGravure
Rotogravure is an intaglio process that developed in the mid 19th century. in the early 1900s, it was particularly used for letter stamps and newspaper.
Process
The rotogravure process s a direct transfer method for printing onto wood-pulp fiber based, synthetic, or laminated substrate, inlcluding - filems such as polyester, OPP, nylon and Re - papers - carbon boards - Aluminum Foil
The cylinder rotates in the ink pan
where the engraved cells fill with ink.
Then the doctor blade removes any of
the excess ink. The cylinder is
brought into contact with the
substrate, which is pressed against it
by the rubber covered impression
roller. The pressure of the roller
results in the direct transfer of ink to
the surface of the substrate. As the
printing roller rotates back into the
ink pan, the area of the substrate
proceeds through a dryer and onto
the next printing unit, normally a
different colour or maybe a varnish or
coating.
Cost
The cost of a gravure printing press is in the
$1 million range
• A single gravure cylinder costs around $8000
• It is less expensive to run as it produces more
pages per impression (turns of the cylinder)
• It is very expensive to change\replace the cylinders
Lithographic
Lithography is th process of printing from a flat surface treated so as to repel the ink except where it is required for printing
