Tigers can reach a length of up to 3.3 metres (11 feet) and weigh as much as 300 kilograms (660 pounds).

Tigers are usually orange or reddish orange with very bold, uneven black stripes and white areas on the chest, neck, belly and inside of the legs. Their stripes act as camouflage, making it difficult for them to be seen when they are among the trees and shrubs of the jungle.

There are rules against the capturing of Sumatran Tigers. Even now, Sumatran Tiger furs and bones are for sale in the black markets. Some people are secretly catching them. This sort of hunting is hard to stop, and is one of the main reasons why the Sumatran Tigers are growing smaller.

On the island of Sumatra where the Sumatran Tigers live, forests are disappearing. Sumatran Tigers need a wider place to live. Forests get smaller, and the number of Sumatran Tigers is shrinking.

why they are endangered

Many subspecies of the tiger are either endangered or already extinct. Humans are the primary cause of this through hunting and the destruction of habitats.

Around half of tiger cubs don’t live beyond two years of age.

Tiger cubs leave their mother when they are around 2 years of age.


A group of tigers is known as an ‘ambush’ or ‘streak’.

Tigers are good swimmers and can swim up to 6 kilometres.

Rare white tigers carry a gene that is only present in around 1 in every 10000 tigers.
