Control measures for temporary works
Controls for excavations
To prevent
collapse
Shoring
Trench box
Battering
To prevent impact with
buried services
Use of cable avoidance tool (CAT scanner)
Hand digging until buried cables are located
Map/drawing detailing the location of buried services
To prevent
people falling in
Crossing points over long excavations
Adequate lighting
Barriers around sides of excavation with guardrails & toe-boards
To prevent
objects/materials falling in
Do not store equipment & materials near edge of excavation
Kerbs around excavation to prevent vehicles falling in
Keep spoil heaps away from edge of excavation
Controls for
flooding
Water extraction pumps in case of sudden ingress of water
Rain barriers around the edge of the excavation
Controls for
hazardous substances ingress
Regular air monitoring
Wearing of PPE where necessary (RPE specifically)
Controls for
adjacent structures
Regular monitoring of building structure (structural engineer)
Support systems (e.g. bracing/underpinning)
Inspection requirements for excavations
Should be inspected:
After any fall of material or person into the excavation
After any event likely to affect its strength or stability
Before the start of every work shift
Controls for demolition work
Carry out demolition in reverse order to construction (plans must be available)
No free standing walls left on their own
Use of scaffolding platforms
Disturbed staircases not used
Restrict access to demolition area
Correct disconnection of services
Pre-demolition survey
Adequate lighting
General controls
Segregation of work areas
Amendment of emergency procedures
Appointment of competent persons
Welfare provision
Clear communication & co-operation
