Domesday book
-
Why was it needed?
In 1085, William had to create a large army and bring them to Normandy because of a threat of an invasion.
However, it never happened, but the army still had to be paid for.
-
Unfortunately, no one bothered to find out exactly how much everyone owned, and it was unfair as some people were not paying as much tax as they should.
-
What is it?
-
A record of the extent, liability, value and ownership of land in all of England- except for in the far north.
-
How did it happen?
The officials, after meeting with the priest, the reeve and six men from each village, travelled around 13000 villages, surveying them all.
A second group followed close behind, double checking everything.
