        • Most commonly used device
        • Simple method that allows patient movement
        • Useful for a patient requiring low oxygen concentrations
        • Oxygen concentrations of 24% at 1L/min to 44% at 6L/min can be obtained
      - Interventions: :check:
        • Assess patient’s nares and ears for skin breakdown.
        • Stabilize nasal cannula when caring for restless patient
        • Amount of O2 inhaled depends on room air and patient’s breathing pattern
        • COPD patients can tolerate 2 L/min via nasal cannula
        • If flow rate is >5 L/min, nasal membranes may dry and cause pain in frontal sinuses
  - - - • Covers patient’s nose and mouth
        • Used for short periods, especially when transporting patients.
        • Long use is not tolerated due to heat generated around nose and mouth from the tight seal.
        • Oxygen concentrations of 35%-50% can be achieved with flow rates of 6-12 L/min
        • Mask provides adequate humidification of inspired air
      - Interventions: :check:
        • Mask must fit snugly
        • Nasal cannula may be used while patient is eating
        • Watch for skin breakdown at top of ears from straps.
        • Wash and dry under mask every 2 hours
