The MSPP and CDC developed CHW training materials on cholera education and prevention.
The CDC trained 24 master trainers from the MSPP.
Then, the master trainers trained 1,100 CHWs using CDC materials.
Curt Welling was the former president and CEO of AmeriCares. He quickly helped make fighting cholera their top priority.
AmeriCares had cholera medicines and hygiene supplies in stock when the first case was confirmed.
Within 24 hours an emergency shipment was sent to the hospital in St. Marc.
Government Actions
Federal Level
Scientists, advisors, specialists, doctors, and staff were sent to Haiti and the D.R to help.
The Division of Global HIV/AIDS also helped. They opened CDC’s first office in Haiti during the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
State Level
The MSPP created a national surveillance system to track cases of the disease.
The MSPP and CDC quickly provided Haitian news channels with 5 prevention messages on how to protect yourself from cholera.
The MSPP and CDC created cholera treatment and prevention materials.
They trained 500 healthcare workers. There were 10,000 workers a few months into the outbreak.
U.S. government agencies, PEPFAR, NGO’s, and the CDC obtained resources from Haiti.
This increased the number of cholera treatment centers, oral rehydration sites, and saved 7,000 lives.
