Nervous system
Central nervous system: (brain, spinal cord nerve centres)
Protection
-
-
Cerebrospinal fluid: fluid between layers which cushions the effects of a blow to the nerves centres
Tissues
Grey matter: mainly neuron cell bodies and dendrites which control centres that carry out certain functions
-
-
Brain: (brain, cerebellum, brain stem, spinal bulb)
SPINAL BULB: it regulates involuntary functions such as heartbeat, blood pressure and breathing
BRAIN STEM: it regulates sleep, visual and auditory reflexes and communication between the cerebellum and other parts of the brain.
CEREBELLUM: it regulates balance and coordinates motor activities (walk, ride a bicycle..)
CEREBRUM
-
The grey matter forms the cerebral cortex, which is responsible for acquired behaviour.
-
Longitudinal fissure divides the cerebrum into 2 hemispheres connected by a strip of white matter called corpus callosum.
The left hemisphere controls the right side of the body and is responsible for logic and analytical thinking
The right hemisphere controls the left side of the body and is responsible for intuition and creativity.
Functions
Receives information from sensory organs, apart from the organ responsible for balance, and produces the corresponding sensations.
-
-
Controls higher nerve functions like memory, reasoning, intelligence, conscience and will.
