Data Collection and Analysis
How did we collect data?
Collection of data
Tower block (Window facing North-West)
Data collection from 20-26 February 2017
Control room adjacent to experiment room
Average temperature at about 29°C over a period of 1 week
Eco cooler installed in Room 705
Quantitative data: Average temperature at about 28°C over a period of 1 week.
Qualitative analysis: Cannot feel much difference in overall coolness
OKR (Window facing South-East)
Data collection from 28 February - 6 March 2017.
Eco cooler installed in B307
Quantitative data: Temperature difference of 0.4°C when compared to control room
Qualitative analysis: Room feels slightly cooler than usual
Control room adjacent to experiment room
Initial control of hygrometers
placed 2 hygrometers beside each other in a same room for 24h
found almost negligible difference in reading of the 2 hygrometers where temp difference was about 0.01deg & 0.02 difference in humidity
ensured a fair test result
Does the Eco-Cooler work? (Analysis of results)
Temperature decrease?
No
What could have went wrong?
Wrong wind direction?
Experiment rooms do not face the prevailing wind direction
Test in one of the rooms facing North-East (Available in Block E)
No wind or wind is not strong enough?
Possibly, may re-test using table top fan
Wind blocked by structures?
Yes, other buildings and vegetation (trees) in front obstruct wind flow
The design of the Eco-Cooler may be fundamentally wrong
Is/are there any significant difference(s) between results for Tower Block and OKR?
Yes
By how much? Is it significant (5°C as claimed)?
No
Temperature decrease of 0.67°C for Tower Block
Is it due to the Eco-Cooler? Might there be possible confounders when the experiment was carried out?
Possible confounders could be that fan was running in the Eco-Cooler room while not in the control room
This can be made more accurate by noting down when the fans were turned on or off
Humidity
Was there any significant humidity difference between control and experimental rooms?
For tower block, humidity increased in room of eco cooler by about 2 units
Could there be confounders such as wet clothes/towels in a room leading to greater humidity in one room?
Is humidity the main reason behind discomfort, instead of temperature?
Maybe. Are there ways to reduce humidity to enhance thermal comfort?
silica gel, rock salt etc
PESTLE Factors
ECONOMIC
Materials used in the construction of our prototype were relatively low-cost, These materials included recycled plastic bottles, tape, cardboard, which can be easily purchased.
SOCIAL
Possible lack of aesthetic appeal of our design, which may discourage people from wanting it to be installed in their rooms
