What factors do you perceive impacting research in the context of your
professional growth?
My thoughts...
I’m not sure if I totally understood the question but here is how I interpreted it. In today’s education workplace the pressure is on for each teacher to demonstrate growth not only in their students, Standard V in my district, but also as educators, Pivot 5 Star evaluations. Also you have to be able to document and prove each to the administration. As a band director I have always seen the student growth as obvious. We are a project based classroom providing the tools the students need to achieve the goal. Unfortunately while providing an end product it does not demonstrate a starting point. So while I would like to put it a bit more positively, my professional growth is very much tied to ways to demonstrate my growth and that of my students to the powers that be. The performance classroom really has not changed much in the last fifty years but the need to justify keeping the performance classroom has. We are making strides, new technology and the ability and learning different ways to implement it is helping. While we may not have a device for each band student my presentation skills are greatly enhanced as well as the ability to share growth through videos and recordings on different web sites. Also the practice tools help motivate some students and ease what we used to think of as drudge work of the creative tasks.

Greater access to recordings, examples, research and musical ideas, like many other subjects has caused an explosion in the world of music. Because of this ease of access the number of niche musical styles has multiplied exponentially as well as their popularity. This also provides a challenger for the music educator. Our challenge is to create knowledgeable consumers of the plethora of new styles and musics.
