Listening to Texts
Reading aloud needs to be incorporated into all aspects of curriculum because listening time for students can be one of the most productive times in the school day
-
-
When students listen to both literature and informational texts, (especially students of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds) are exposed to stories, information and poems they cannot or will not read on their own.
-
No matter what type of text is chosen as the read aloud, teachers should consider the complexity of ideas, development of characters, language, and visuals that are present throughout the book
When choosing books it is important to choose books with topics of familiarity, simple sentence structure and illustration
Teachers should have a balance between formal and informal assessments. More direct approaches include literature circles, book talks, free responses and literature journals. More informal approaches include encouraging students to react privately to what they hear and having them discuss their thoughts and feelings freely with those around them/ as a class.
The purpose of introducing a story for read aloud is to set the purpose and provide support as the students listen to the book
