The Big Three And Their Aims
woodrow Wilson
Trying to make the world a safer place
Want America to get involved in world politics as a force of good
Set out his aims in 1918 in the fourteen points: (some are mentioned)
League of nations: an international police force to help countries sort out disputes without going to war
Self determination: wants people in colonies to have a say in their government. In addition wants the Austro-Hungarians to rule themselves in their own country
Wanted an open diplomacy
Establishing equal and free trade
disarmament (countries reducing their weapons)
wanted a fair peace treaty and not humiliate germany
Relationship with the other two
Thinks that the other two are too selfish and are just trying to make good deals for their country
Relationship back home
His political enemies would take any chance to get him
Georges Clemenceau
Wanted compensations (reparations) from Germany for the damage caused during war. These were so heavy that Germany would not be able to afford anything (7 billion marks)
Wanted Germany to be divided in separate states
He wanted further security from any German attack
Took Alsace and Lorraine back
Demilitarized the Rhineland
Made East-Prussia the 'polish corridor' which had the pride and glory of the German Arms
In general wanted to 'cripple Germany'
Relationship with the other two
He thinks that Wilson is too idealistic and is trying to make the treaty his own way. He also does not trust David George
He thinks both of them do not care about france
Relationship with people back home
Under a lot of pressure to make France safe from any German attack.
David Lloyd George
(Poor welsh boy made good, brilliant layer and smart talker)
Peace and Trade: Wanted peace in Europe that would last to build Britain's Trade
Wanted to take Germans Colonies to expand the British Empire for useful resources etc..
Revenge: The British public were also demanding Germany be punished severely. Lloyd George knew this and during the
1918 election he promised the British people he would ‘Make Germany Pay’. However, Lloyd George also worried that if
the treaty was too harsh on Germany they may seek revenge in the future and cause another war
Protect the British Empire: He also wanted Germany to lose its navy and all the colonies it owned overseas so it could not
threaten the British Empire and Britain would remain the strongest naval power in the world.
Relationship and arguments with the other two
Annoyed from Wilson as he wanted colonies to be free, and David's main focus is to build and enrich his empire, so they disagreed with that.
Him and Clemenceau have totally different views and therefore tried to punch each other! as they disagreed with each others statements
Relationship with people back home
Back home only would be happy if there was a treaty that would punish Germany and wanted revenge, this was proven from their saying 'squeeze Germany like a lemon'
