Introduction
The political and economic situation in East Anglia can be seen to account for the extent of witch persecutions in the years 1645-47 due to the increased poverty and lack of political security. However, critics argue that there are other factors that are the cause of the extent of the witch persecutions, such as Hopkins (who named himself the Witchfinder General) and Stearne, who undertook witch trials. This essay will look at the unique political and economic situation in East Anglia, and compare it with the other factors argued, to agree with the statement.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this shows that despite Hopkins and Stearne being seen as an important role for the extent of witch persecutions in the years 1645-47, they can be seen to have been enabled from the political and economic situation. This is shown by the fact that they were trying to tackle evil in East Anglia that was corrupted by a crisis of economics and politics. This essay agrees overall, that the unique political and economic situation in East Anglia did account for the extent of witch persecutions in the years 1645-47, as it presented its own issues, but can be seen to enable the others too.
I disagree
Factor 1
Hopkins and Stearne were more important. They accounted alone for the investigations of witches, and used torture and sleep deprivation in order to find confessions/someone guilty
Factor 2
The Civil War can be seen as a bigger reasons as it can be seen to have caused the political and economic situation, as well as furthering it. This is shown through the army confiscating crops and horses, without increasing the wage of farmers. The civil war also meant a lack of political structure, as it meant the system became hectic.
