General Requirements for Work Equipment

Equipment should be suitable in terms of:
Task
- not using a screwdriver as a hammer -
fit for purpose
Environment
- a diesel or petrol forklift in not suitable for indoor use -
fit for the place
Integrity
- through it's design, construction and adaptation, conforming to relevant standards (CE marking with European Union)
Prevention of access to dangerous parts of machinery (PUWER Regulation 11)
If machinery could cause foreseeable injury, access to it should be prevented

Systems in place - safe systems of work, permit-to-work
Physical methods to isolate movement or energy sources (electrically or mechanically)
Lock Out, Tag Out of electrical isolation points
Prevent unauthorised access using barriers & signs
Maintenance staff to be competent & use appropriate PPE
Controls to prevent fire or explosion (removing fuels before hot works)
Two people for high risk operations (e.g. use of ladders or confined space work)

Users should:
Only use equipment they are authorised to use
Not use equipment if it is unsafe
Carry out checks before using equipment
Follow safe systems of work provided
Keep equipment clean
Report any defects
