War at sea

Brutal fighting

The British failed to use their powerful navy effectively during the war.

In 1775 the Continental Congress made plans to build four American war ships.

The American troops seized the main supply fort on the Bahamas.

John Paul Jones

France leaders presented him with seven vessels to command.

The greatest and famous victories was the capture of the British warships Serapis.

Bonhomme Richard capitan of the seapis called out to John and said "has you ship struck."

War in the west

He has planned to do a surprise attack on Fort Sackville near the town of Vincennes.

They had to do a 18 day march through freezinz water.

George Rogers Clark volunteered to lead the western campaign to the Appalachian Mountains.

Georgia was the last to join the revolution and was the first to fallv to the British.

In early 1780 General Clinton landed a force of 14,000 troops around the port city.

Banastre Tarleton he refused to take prisoners and killed soilders who tried to surrender.

A Fail Attack

The Patriot quickly fell apart .

General Nathanael Greene later wrote "I have never witnessed such scenes."

In August 1780 Patriot forces led by Horatio Gates tried to drive the British out of Camden, South Carolina.

Gurrilla Warfare

The southen PAtriots switched to swift hit and run attacks.

Despte their great effeorts the British could not catch them.

People called Francis Marion Swamp Fox.
